Fretwise Pro: The Path

1. Quick start

Start with Position Path.

1. Install and open Fretwise Pro: The Path.
2. Enter your licence key if the activation screen appears.
3. Choose Position Path from the Mode control.
4. Select a root key, key type, fret range, string group, tuning, and path direction.
5. Review the suggested route and choose an alternate route when useful.
6. Play the complete route, then use Practice Route to move through it one step at a time.
7. Repeat the same route until you can recognize both the shapes and the sound of the movement.

2. Licence activation

Activate the app with the key from your receipt.

Initial activation

1. Complete the purchase through the hosted Lemon Squeezy checkout.
2. Open the order receipt email and copy the licence key.
3. Open Fretwise Pro and paste the key into the licence field.
4. Select Activate Licence.
5. Keep the receipt email for future installation or support.

Using another computer

The personal licence is planned for activation on up to two personal computers. Use the app's deactivation option before replacing a computer or when you need to free an activation.

Internet access

Internet access is required for purchase, download, initial activation, and occasional licence validation. Normal practice should not require a connection every time the app opens.

3. Main interface

Understand the controls before practising.

4. Position Path

Learn every chord in a key inside one fret zone.

Position Path is the main Fretwise workflow. It finds playable triad shapes inside the selected part of the neck and orders them into a practical route.

Set up a route

1. Select Position Path.
2. Choose the root and key type.
3. Select a fret range such as 0–5 or 5–9.
4. Select all strings or a smaller string group.
5. Choose Low-to-High or High-to-Low movement.
6. Review the suggested route.

Choose the route shape

Use the suggested route first. When alternate routes are available, compare the Low, Middle, or High Position Route and choose the version that best matches the neck area you want to master.

Practise the route

1. Select Play Full Route to hear the complete movement.
2. Use Previous, Play Step, and Next to work one chord at a time.
3. Use Hide Answers when you want to test your memory.
4. Watch the Focus Neck for the current chord while the Reference Neck keeps the complete route visible.
5. Repeat in the opposite direction after the first route feels comfortable.

5. Triad Path

Step through the diatonic triads in the current key.

Triad Path is useful for learning I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, and vii° as connected chord shapes.

1. Select Triad Path.
2. Choose the key, fret range, string group, and tuning.
3. Select a scale degree from 1 through 7, or use the previous/next controls.
4. Review the root, chord quality, and the 1–3–5 notes shown on the neck.
5. Play the active triad or the full triad path.
6. Switch between ascending and descending movement to learn the route in both directions.

Use Triad Path when you want to focus on chord function and inversion movement without the full Position Path practice workflow.

6. Scale Map

See the selected scale across the chosen neck area.

1. Select Scale Map.
2. Choose the root, key or scale type, fret range, strings, and tuning.
3. Use the highlighted scale tones to find available notes inside the selected area.
4. Click a note to hear it.
5. Use the scale playback control or the S shortcut to hear the selected scale or arpeggio when available.

Scale Map is most useful after you have a route in mind. Use it to connect the chord route to nearby scale tones rather than treating the scale as an isolated pattern.

7. Chord Tones

Map the formula of a selected chord.

1. Select Chord Tones.
2. Choose the root and chord type.
3. Review the displayed root, third, fifth, seventh, and any available extension tones.
4. Click notes on the neck to hear individual tones.
5. Use chord playback to hear the formula as a complete chord.

Use this mode to understand why a chord has its quality and to locate each formula tone across the selected strings and fret range.

8. Key Triads reference

Review the diatonic chord family for the selected key.

The Key Triads information is a learning reference for the seven diatonic triads in the current key. In version 1, use it as a reference panel within Triad Path rather than as a separate main mode.

1. Choose the key.
2. Review degrees I through vii° and each chord quality.
3. Select a degree to hear the chord and see its root, third, and fifth.
4. Use the information alongside Triad Path or Position Path to understand the function of each step.

9. Ear Trainer

Recognize triad function, quality, and root by sound.

1. Select Ear Trainer.
2. Choose the question type: Degree, Quality, or Root Note.
3. Select New Question and listen to the hidden triad.
4. Select an answer. You can click answer choices to hear the available options.
5. Use Replay when you need to hear the hidden triad again.
6. Review the score and weak areas in Practice History.
7. Use Reset Score to begin a fresh session.

10. Progression Trainer

Loop progressions using playable positions.

Use a preset

1. Select Progression Trainer.
2. Choose a preset such as I–IV–V, I–vi–IV–V, ii–V–I, or I–V–vi–IV.
3. Choose the playable fret range and route positions.
4. Set chord length, BPM, and metronome options.
5. Select Play Loop. The current chord is highlighted as the progression moves.
6. Select Stop when finished.

Build a custom progression

1. Add the scale degrees you want to practise.
2. Set the loop-from and loop-to range when practising only part of the progression.
3. Use Next Chord for manual movement or Play Loop for continuous practice.
4. Adjust BPM gradually as the movement becomes more comfortable.

11. Route Drill

Test whether you remember the route without following it in order.

Route Drill is a 16-question practice game based on the current route.

1. Create or select a Position Path route first.
2. Open Route Drill.
3. Answer the randomly selected route-step question.
4. Continue until all 16 questions are complete.
5. Review correct answers, missed answers, accuracy, mistakes for the current question, and weak degrees.
6. Repeat the drill or return to Position Path to practise the weak degrees.

12. Voice-Leading Trainer

Find the smoothest inversion change between two chords.

1. Select Voice-Leading Trainer.
2. Listen to the From chord.
3. Choose a target scale degree.
4. Compare the available To inversions.
5. Select the inversion that you think moves the voices the shortest distance.
6. Use Reveal Best Choice to check the smoothest option.
7. Review best choices, missed choices, and weak target degrees in Practice History.

Listen for common tones that stay in place and for notes that move by the smallest possible interval.

13. Tuner

Tune the guitar using local microphone input.

1. Select Tuner.
2. Select Start Tuner or the equivalent microphone control.
3. Allow microphone access when Windows or the app asks.
4. Play one string clearly and let it ring.
5. Adjust the tuning peg until the displayed note and pitch indicator are centred.
6. Repeat for every string.
7. Stop the tuner when finished.

14. Custom tunings

Use preset alternate tunings or save your own.

Preset tunings include Standard, Drop D, DADGAD, Open G, Open D, Half-step down, and Whole-step down.

Choose a preset

1. Open the Tuning control.
2. Select the desired preset.
3. The fretboard and note calculations update to match the chosen open strings.

Create a custom tuning

1. Select Custom.
2. Choose one open note for each of the six strings.
3. Enter a name and save the preset.
4. Select the saved tuning whenever you want to use it.
5. Delete an old preset when it is no longer needed, or reset the active tuning to Standard.

Custom tunings are stored locally on the current computer.

15. Practice History

Use your results to decide what to practise next.

Practice History appears in Ear Trainer, Route Drill, and Voice-Leading Trainer.

It may include:

• All-time correct and missed answers
• All-time accuracy
• Best score
• Most recent score or session
• Weak scale degrees or targets

Reset History clears the stored practice information on the current computer. Practice History does not automatically sync between computers.

16. Colours and Tone

Adjust the visual skin and guitar playback.

Colours

Use the Colours control to change the app's visual skin. The available v1 skins are White, Light Pink, Neon Pink, Blue, and Brown. The selected skin affects the broader interface as well as the fretboard accents.

Tone

Use the Tone control to choose the available guitar playback style, including Clean, Distortion, and Fuzz where provided in the current build.

Fretwise Pro does not include a separate volume slider. Use Windows, your speakers or headphones, or the system volume mixer to adjust volume.

17. Keyboard shortcuts

Move and replay without reaching for the mouse.

Held-key repeat is ignored for the S, P, and T playback shortcuts to protect the audio engine from repeated rapid triggers.
